Danielle, this poem is like a painting…I can see Shannon in my mind and feel the depths of your connection. As an aside, while reading your piece and how you struggle with the words and thought to find perfection I am reminded of a Canadian poetry class I took many years ago: although my thoughts don’t relate directly to tyour beautiful poetry, they are (what I think) words of wisdom to both the poet and the reader.

Years ago I was in a class where a student was giving a presentation of her thoughts and interpretations of a Dorothy Livesay poem. Unbeknownst to this young woman, the prof had invited Dorothy to be present for the presentation. At the end of the presentation the prof turned to Ms. Livesay and asked to critique the students work. Her response has lived with me since that day. A poet writes to express an idea and a feeling or spirit. The reader takes those words and makes them their own. No interpretation of a poem is incorrect because the words belong to the reader once the poet has released them.

You have released your beautiful memories, thoughts, and feelings about your relationship with your sister then and now. Anyone reading can take those words and make them part of their reality…personal and most likely different. Thank you. (Love you!)

Amazing piece again Danielle. The pain of loss you have been faced with is unparalleled. With Shannon’s birthday on the horizon it is yet another reminder of living in a Shannonless world. Love you and so immensely proud of you.
