Thank you for sharing this with me. It’s so heartwarming to know that sharing my grief helps others carry theirs 💜.
Grief is hard (and it’s often lonely). When I sit down to write a story, I’m always holding my readers in my heart and mind. My hope is that by sharing my grief stories, the people who read them might see pain that looks familiar. Knowing the ways grief can look and feel can remind us that living with loss hurts, but it doesn’t mean we are broken (even if we might feel that way sometimes).
What you write is so beautiful and powerful and i can definitely feel in every line of this essay 1. how much you love your sister, and 2. How much you care about your readers, because how you share is very different than how i ever saw people write about grief. It usually feels super heavy, and your share is heartbreaking 💔 and in the same time written with so much tenderness and love that unlike any other time when i read someone’s share of grief, which can be overwhelming sometimes, reading your story makes me want to read more!
So excruciating to think of THREE dear and beloved people in your life who aren’t alive anymore. Even one is too much to bear for me to IMAGINE- let alone you lived it! Times 3 💔and are still continuing to live with that loss. Takes tremendous courage 🙏
I appreciate your words so, so much. I care deeply for my readers, and I put so much into my stories because I want my writing to move people. And I also want to honour my dad, sister, and husband.
I abhorJuly as well. My parents anniversary is July 2 (they never saw their 21st), My mother had her final stroke on July 4th and I turned off her respirator on the 10th. Her birthday (105th this year) is July 21.
I buried my father 15 months before my mother. He was 55 (cancer) and she was an active alcoholic and heavy smoker as well as a polio victim. I was 21. I am now 68.
I miss them all terribly. Again you have shared your joy balanced with pain in
a vulnerable and raw way. I am so proud of you and love you unconditionally.
Thank you, mom. I know how much you miss them too. They made the world better just by being in it.
The time we had with them just wasn’t enough.
Thank you for sharing your story. It helps me carry my own grief stories. I hope that knowing you are heard helps you a little bit too.

I'm so sorry you've known so much loss, Danielle.
How beautiful that he wanted to honour Shannon in his own way.
